Description
The Annual Blessing of the Fleet is a traditional maritime event in most ports with large sea-going populations such as Panama City. Religious representatives commemorate those who were lost at sea the previous year and ask Gods blessing for those who make their living from the sea and pray for continued safe passage of all vessels.
Note From Marina Director ( Bill Lloyd)
The Panama City Blessing of the Fleet was started in 1997 by the Panama City Coastal Cruisers boating club. It is always held the last Saturday in March and is generally considered to be "opening day on the Bay" and the official start of our boating season. Coastal Cruisers detached themselves from the event some years ago but it continued thanks to management of the event by former CC commodore Skip Cruz and the staff of Panama City Marina. Three years ago Skip turned the event over to the marina and in order to keep it growing we involved a local charity, 2nd chance of NW FL. It has become their major fund raiser of the year as they sell ad space on the Blessing poster and host a food sale during the event.
There is no charge for boats to participate; they just need to show up at the appointed time. We generally have about 50 or so boats parade past the marina to be blessed by local clergy. We also have live entertainment. Last year there were two local bands that played from 9 to 1 and as previously mentioned, a fish fry. All local law enforcement participates as well as the Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard. The Navy usually sends one of their dive training ships and if weather allows, ties to the seawall afterwards and conducts tours. The Air Force sends one of their drone retrieval vessels. Last year we had great weather and a really big crowd on the seawall.
