Anything That Floats Race 2014
Milk jugs, plastic wrap and T-shirts? And old bikes? Really?
You’re supposed to build a floating vessel out of them?
They aren’t the first building materials that would occur to me for a boat. But then, few of us understand the way the minds of the folks in the Florida Keys work. They’re always coming up with new and wacked-out ways to have fun – and the Anything that Floats Race, paddling into Key Largo (Blackwater Sound, mile marker 104, bayside) Aug. 15, 2015, is one cup-of-crazy you won’t want to miss.
Here’s how it works. You make a homemade vessel out of stuff that you can find around your house, grab your oars and splash on down to the festival. Suggested materials for building your – umm, thing-that-hopefully-floats include:
- Duct Tape
- Milk Jugs
- Five Gallon Buckets
- Saran Wrap
- Old T-Shirts
- Outdoor Furniture
- Pool Noodles
Which begs the question: What can’t you use? Now, that list is considerably shorter. No motors, inflatable rafts, foam or pool toys are allowed.
Prizes will be awarded for:
- Best decorated boat under 18 feet
- Best decorated boat over 18 feet
- Best Looking Crew (in costumes)
- Hard Luck Story
Everyone who enters and competes is a winner.
If you don’t want to enter the race, you can join the regatta on Blackwater Sound or cheer on your favorite team from land. At sunset, enjoy live tunes from local bands.
Hopefully you won’t need to choose between sinking and swimming. Either way, a good time is sure to be had by all.
